Why Barcelona are holding back from signing 17 G/A top full-back this summer
Denzel Dumfries has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent days, but the club has yet to make any concrete move for the Inter Milan defender.
As such, according to an update shared by Adria Fernandez in SPORT, the Catalan side likes Dumfries’ profile and sees him as a perfect fit for the squad.
However, due to ongoing financial fair play and registration issues, Barcelona are unable to prioritise the signing right now.
It must be remembered that the Dutch international’s name came up during the latest meeting between Barcelona’s sporting department and Jorge Mendes, who acts as his agent.
Mendes offered Dumfries to Barça as a potential solution for the right-back position. The defender’s €25 million release clause makes him an attractive option, especially for a player with his quality and experience.
But the clause will expire at the end of July, meaning Barcelona would need to act fast if they want to secure his services.
Right-rack position a concern, but focus is elsewhere
For now, Barcelona have decided to focus on strengthening their attack, particularly after securing the signing of Marcus Rashford.
While Dumfries, who scored 11 goals and six assists last season, is viewed as a great market opportunity, the club’s current priorities lie elsewhere.
The right-back position has not been addressed yet due to budget restrictions and the difficulty in registering new players under La Liga’s financial rules.
That said, there are people inside the club who believe the right-back spot still needs improvement. Jules Kounde has been a regular in that role, but his natural position is centre-back.
The situation with Hector Fort remains unclear as the youngster barely played last season, and Eric Garcia was forced to cover at right-back late in the campaign due to injuries.
Moreover, if Barcelona are to sign Dumfries, registering him would be very difficult for the Blaugrana, which is why they are not moving for him at the moment.
