How to Maintain a Reformer Bed
Maintain a Reformer Bed
Whether you rent or own a reformer bed at home, or are considering the investment to purchase this large Pilates equipment, it is important to know how to maintain it. The reformer is not a cheap piece of fitness equipment and is very complex, with many moving parts and mechanisms that need to be cleaned on a regular basis. This will help to keep the machine working smoothly, reduce wear and tear and prevent damage.
A reformer consists of a bed-like rectangular frame that has a padded carriage on top. Depending on the model, the frame is made of wood or metal. At one end of the reformer is an adjustable bar which can be lowered or raised to change the height of the carriage. Attached to the end of this bar are long straps with loop handles for feet or hands. These can be pulled or pushed to change the resistance of the springs attached to the carriage – making exercises easier or more challenging.
The carriage on the reformer has sliding runners which allow it to slide up and down on the frame. This gives us the ability to move and work different muscle groups without having to move or shift our position on the mat. It also provides feedback – by allowing us to pull or push on the bars and handles we can see if we are doing the exercise correctly and that helps to develop good movement patterns.
The reformer can also be used for more advanced Pilates exercises that would not be possible on the mat. For example, the “long stretch” is a total-body Pilates exercise that strengthens and tones the entire body and improves posture. Footwork: Lying on your back with feet on the footbar, this exercise helps to strengthen the legs and improve mobility. The Hundred: A classic Pilates exercise that involves pumping the arms while engaging the core to build endurance. Leg Circles: Lying on your back, this exercise targets the hip muscles and helps improve flexibility and joint mobility.

How to Maintain a Reformer Bed
Improved Core Strength: Many Pilates exercises on the reformer are designed to engage the core muscles. The reformer’s resistance provides a challenging environment to build abdominal and lower back strength. Enhanced Flexibility: The reformer allows for deep stretching exercises that help improve flexibility, particularly in the legs, back, and shoulders. The controlled movements on the reformer can increase the range of motion and improve posture.
Low-Impact: Pilates on a reformer is a low-impact form of exercise, making it suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. It’s also ideal for people with joint pain or recovering from injuries, as it minimizes stress on the joints while still offering a full-body workout. Improved Balance and Coordination: The reformer encourages focus on precise movements and body control, which can help improve overall coordination and balance.
Full-Body Workout: Reformer Pilates is designed to engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously. This full-body workout can increase muscle tone and strength without the bulk typically associated with weightlifting. Customization: Because the reformer bed is adjustable, it allows for personalized workouts tailored to individual fitness levels. The resistance can be altered based on the user’s needs, offering endless possibilities for modifying exercises.
