Newer Kia Sportage, Carnival recalled for loose roof parts

The Kia Carnival minivan and Kia Sportage compact crossover have been recalled for roof molding that can become loose or detach from the vehicle and cause a road hazard for other cars, the NHTSA revealed Monday.

The roof molding may have been installed incorrectly or the clips holding the molding into place may have been compromised due to too much roof sealer. Occupants might notice excessive roof noise, and the loose molding may be noticeable by looking at the roof.

The recall encompasses the 2022-2024 Kia Carnival and 2023-2024 Kia Sportage, affecting 101,049 vehicles total in the U.S. This is the first recall for this generation of the Carnival, formerly known as the Sedona, whereas this marks the sixth recall for the Kia Sportage crossover SUV that was redesigned in 2023.

A recall for loose trim pieces is not uncommon. Also this week, Ford announced a recall for loose trim pieces on the A-pillars of older Ford Explorers.

Kia owners can expect notification by mail by March 15, 2024, and will be advised to bring their vehicles in to a Kia service center. The roof molding in question will be inspected and replaced, if necessary, at no cost to owners. For more info, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or visit Kia’s recall page here.
