Barcelona yet to make a move for Tottenham midfielder, January deal unlikely

Following the season-ending ACL injury to Gavi, Barcelona have been contemplating the possibility of bringing in another midfielder on a short-term deal.

The salary space created from Gavi’s absence will be utilised to register Vitor Roque, meaning the arrival of a midfielder would depend on the Catalans receiving the €40 million due payment from German investors Libero.

Manager Xavi Hernandez, though, remains keen on signing a midfielder and has made Tottenham star Giovani Lo Celso his main target.

In fact, it was even reported that the Barcelona manager had asked the club to make an effort to sign the Argentine as proof of support for his project.

Lo Celso unlikely to arrive

But, AS is now reporting that Barcelona are yet to make any move for Lo Celso so far, two weeks away from the January transfer window.

Barça and the player’s agents were in contact during the summer over a possible move, but Spurs never sat down to negotiate the transfer.

Now, Xavi has once again called for the signing of the Argentinian midfielder because he considers him to be a hugely creative player who would be a great asset to Barça’s play between the lines after Gavi’s injury.

However, contacts have not been made despite the wishes of the Barcelona coach.

Furthermore, with the 27-year-old playmaker’s role and prominence increasing at Tottenham in recent weeks, the chances of him arriving in Catalonia appear non-existent.

Lo Celso will be essential for Spurs when they lose Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will leave for the Africa Cup of Nations.

So, as things stand, Barcelona’s pursuit of the former PSG ace looks cold.
