Barcelona veteran’s renewal will depend on new manager, club value player’s contributions

Sergi Roberto is one of the few Barcelona players whose contract expires at the end of the ongoing season.

The 32-year-old club captain has been with the Blaugrana since he was 15 and has spent 14 seasons with the first-team setup after making his debut under Pep Guardiola.

However, Roberto’s future at the club heading into the summer is far from certain, with the player’s contract expiring.

In fact, recent reports even suggested that Barcelona had decided not to renew Roberto’s contract and let him leave for free.

Roberto’s renewal still possible

However, a fresh report from Jordi Gil of SPORT claims that Roberto could still remain at Barcelona beyond the ongoing campaign.

As per the report, Barça have not entirely ruled out the possibility of extending their first captain’s contract by another year despite speculations that he will be let go as Xavi will no longer be at the club.

The Catalan giants are happy and satisfied with Roberto. His contribution when he has been able to play, his role in keeping the dressing room together, and his acceptance of a contract that helps to comply with financial fair play, are highly valued by the club.

Decision depends on new manager

Roberto has always maintained that he wishes to continue at Barcelona and is willing to wait until the end of the season to make a decision.

As such, the decision of the new manager who replaces Xavi will be fundamental to whether the 32-year-old is handed a contract or not.

If the next coach counts on him, Roberto will renew for another season. If the manager tells him that he does not fit into his plans, the veteran would consider a change of scenery as he never wants to be a problem for the club.

In case of an exit, the MLS and the Premier League could be viable options for Roberto. For now, though, every scenario remains in play and the decision of the incoming coach will have a huge say.
