Barcelona president confirms club’s intention to permanently sign €110 million loan duo: “We plan to start negotiations”

Barcelona were obliged to spend last summer penny-pinching as the club’s financial resources did not allow for big-money signings to be made.

However, the club’s strained finances have not hindered their ability to lure top-tier talent. With free agents and loanees signed, the Catalans capped off their summer transfer window with some big names residing within their ranks.

The dramatic deadline-day acquisitions of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix especially took the headlines, as the pair arrived on loan in just the nick of time.

Speculation regarding their future has been a recurring topic of discussion, and President Joan Laporta has come out to give Barça’s stance on their situation.

The Joaos will stay put in Barcelona

Laporta publicly gave the Portuguese duo their flowers, while emphasizing that the club will be able to continue benefiting from their services for seasons to come, stating:

“Cancelo and Felix have been playing on a high level since they joined. The club will be able to keep them for the coming seasons. We plan to start negotiations for them shortly, and we have good relations with both Manchester City and Atletico Madrid.”

With information straight from the horse’s mouth, it is safe to say the likelihood of Felix and Cancelo continuing in Catalonia has now considerably risen.

Duo in good form

Cancelo has reportedly impressed players and coaches alike with his professionalism and dominant performances, and he recently produced a match-winning masterclass against FC Porto.

Meanwhile, his compatriot, Joao Felix has done ever so well in the previous matches too, with goals in successive games and a statement performance against Atletico Madrid, his parent club.

Despite financial hurdles, Barcelona aim to negotiate with both players’ clubs, and Laporta’s words imply their future with the Catalan giants is almost as good as guaranteed.
