Barcelona out-of-favour defender wants to continue at loan club

Barcelona loanee Sergino Dest’s progress at PSV Eindhoven came to a sudden halt when he suffered a serious knee injury during training in April, requiring surgery and sidelining him until January 2025.

This unfortunate event cast a shadow over PSV’s initial plan to exercise their purchase option for €10 million this summer.

However, reports suggest PSV’s interest in Dest remains strong.

Despite Xavi’s departure and Hansi Flick’s subsequent arrival at Barcelona, the American’s fortunes are unlikely to change drastically and a permanent move remains the most desired option by the club.

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has suggested that Sergino Dest himself has set his sights on a permanent move to PSV Eindhoven despite his injury setback.

The strongest indicator of Dest’s potential future lies in his recovery process. Unlike Mexican full-back Julián Araujo, who is back at Barcelona’s facilities despite his loan not being officially over, Dest is undergoing rehabilitation at PSV’s facilities.

Not to mention, Dest himself acknowledged the positive impact of his time at PSV in the past.

“I needed the warmth that the people at PSV gave me. I had to feel good again and really find myself at home. So from there, I was able to show myself again,” he said in January.

This suggests a strong commitment from both the player and the club towards a long-term solution.

However, it must be noted that PSV might look to re-look all the terms of the agreement before committing to a permanent deal for Dest.

Barcelona, for their part, will be looking at Dest’s departure quite favourably as the club look to further trim the squad in an attempt to decrease the salary mass.

Only time will tell how the negotiations unfold, but one thing’s for sure: Dest’s future appears to be in Eindhoven, not Barcelona.
