Barcelona more than satisfied with summer signing despite limited playing time – report

Not much was expected from Oriol Romeu when he joined Barcelona from Girona for a nominal fee of €3.4 million last summer. As a result, the former Chelsea and Southampton midfielder excelled to the extent that he started seven of Barcelona’s first eight games.

Over the past few weeks, however, there has been a decline in his presence, and his numbers have now been confined to just four starts in the last eight games.

Romeu has Barcelona DNA

Despite these numbers, though, Mundo Deportivo has learned that Barcelona’s position has not changed with regard to the midfielder.

The aforementioned outlet claims that Romeu continues to fulfil the expectations set by the club’s technical staff, who regard him as an absolute professional rooted in the Barça DNA.

As a result, the player’s personality remains determined, as sources from within Barcelona affirm his continued commitment.

So why is he not playing?

The team’s dynamics, influenced by game circumstances and outcomes, have forced Xavi to introduce a different, yet simple strategy.

This has even led to tactical adjustments, such as the decision to reposition Cancelo from right back to the left wing.

Furthermore, the midfield has transformed with the inclusion of Ilkay Gündogan and the return of Frenkie De Jong and Pedri.

It’s not to say that Romeu has been perfect. The midfielder has had occasional mishaps during the season but he has consistently fulfilled his role as a midfielder.

The veteran summer signing has seamlessly delivered everything Xavi has demanded of him, earning praise from the technical staff.

As such, the coaching staff has had no complaints mostly because Romeu exhibits extreme professionalism in training and characterises himself in the locker room through his strong personality and strong commitment.

As for the midfielder himself, he is fully aware of the challenges associated with earning a spot in the starting XI and he is ready to serve whenever Xavi asks for his services, and this means he has had no thoughts of seeking a change of scenery during this winter transfer window.
